The Brass Junkies Episode 161: Thomas Gansch of Mnozil Brass

Andrew Hitz

This guy is a legend!

I’ll never forget the first time I saw Mnozil Brass. It was at the ITG in Banff in 2008 and I actually stood on the wings and watched them from backstage. What a remarkable vantage point. I could see the crowd reacting to them. Saw them coming on and off. It was one of the best brass performances I’ve ever seen.

Thomas is a delight. He is a wonderful human being filled with so much creative energy that he barely has time to get it all out. And he just has a great attitude about everything: playing, touring, life.

This was one of my favorites (which I feel like I’ve been saying a lot lately but we’ve had an exceptional run of Brass Junkies interviews lately!)

You can watch the episode on YouTube below or head over to Pedal Note Media for all of the links.

Enjoy!

Leonhard Paul of Mnozil Brass joins me & Lance for a spectacular conversation about the phenomenon that is Mnozil Brass. I am so pumped that we got to interview him. He is one of our heroes.

Over the last 24 years, Mnozil Brass has charted a path that is completely unique and continues to amaze audiences all over the globe. Leonhard explains how they plan and develop their shows, pieces and stage settings. He goes on to talk about the development of the YouTube sensation Lonely Boy.

From learning how to work a crowd to the subject of "lip disability", this conversation was both fun and illuminating.

Mnozil Brass: Monday YouTube Fix

Andrew Hitz

I have run out of superlatives to describe Mnozil Brass. The playing. The writing. The staging. The storytelling. Absolutely world class.

Want to make money in the music business? Come up with a concept as original as these guys did.

They did not just do what had already been done but a little better. They are unlike anything that came before them or anything that has come since.

it's hard to get an idea of what Mnozil Brass is like in concert from one clip but this does the trick. They throw one heck of a curveball at you towards the end.

Just stunningly awesome.

Enjoy!

this is a little exerpt out of the new dvd magic moments from mnozil brass. find more info's here: http://www.mnozilbrass.at/shop.html

The Schagerl Brass Festival: Monday YouTube Fix

Andrew Hitz

I stumbled onto this video which is not in English and doesn't list the players or what they are playing but it features a number of members of Mnozil Brass, Gábor Tarkövi (Principal Trumpet - Berlin Philharmonic), and many others!

It is a long video with some of the finest brass playing you will ever hear.  It opens with a performance of Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man" that will blow you away.

Enjoy!

Mnozil Brass Featuring Wilfried Brandstötter: Monday YouTube Fix

Andrew Hitz

Wilfried Brandstötter is one of the best tuba players in the world and Mnozil Brass are not only some of the best players, but some of the best entertainers this world has ever seen.  This tuba solo is just silly good, both musically and conceptually from a staging standpoint. One of the highlights of my 14 years with Boston Brass was a brass festival in Austria where we shared the bill with Mnozil Brass in 2012.  It was an honor getting to see them play and getting to know them.  Wilfried is one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet in the music business.  And what a monster player, as this clip displays.

Enjoy!
